10 Most Underrated Mötley Crüe Songs
5. Afraid - Generation Swine
As the years go by, what the Crue were trying to make on Generation Swine just seems to feel more and more like a misfire. Most of the more experimental cuts have aged like milk, and no one really wanted to hear the band that made Shout at the Devil do something that sounded like Nine Inch Nails. In between the messy moments though, there are a few songs that stood out as something genuinely great.
With Mick Mars' guitars being fed through machines, Afraid feels like Motley Crue at least making an attempt to expand beyond the sounds of something like Dr. Feelgood. Since Vince had taken some time away from the band, the slight change in his vocal register actually works a little bit better here as well, being just another piece of the weird stew behind this entire track.
If anything, the production on this song actually should be considered a step up from the rest of the album, not wanting to subject you to electronic noise and having you go on more of a journey with the song than just a regular punk rock banger. An industrial version of Motley Crue was probably not going to stand the test of time in any decade, but for a brief shining moment on this song, you could say that things had loads of potential.
