10 Most Underrated Paul McCartney Songs
3. Only Mama Knows - Memory Almost Full
As McCartney reached his elderstatesmen phase, there was no real reason to keep making rock tunes like he did in the early days. Whereas a song like Hi Hi Hi or Junior's Farm may have done well in the '70s, the late period albums like Driving Rain and Flaming Pie were going for a more mellow mood than many rock fans may have wanted. Just when you thought his days of heaviness were over, Macca gave us quite the surprise on Memory Almost Full.
For the most part, this album has some decent McCartney tunes like Dance Tonight and Ever Present Past, but Only Mama Knows sticks out like a sore thumb on this album in the best way possible. Opening up like your traditional McCartney tune, the chorus is what really throws you for a loop, where the loud guitars come in and Paul comes through with a vocal that is both angry and playful all at the same time.
This isn't the '50s style rock and roll either, as guitars cascade across your eardrums that almost seem reminiscent of the more caustic rockers on albums like Revolver or even Band on the Run. Even though Paul doesn't kick out the jams that much anymore, when he does decide to throw down, he's playing to win.
