10 Music Artists Who Disappeared From The Limelight
1. Syd Barrett
The aura of Pink Floyd is practically larger than life at this point. While the band isn't as known by individual members all that often, any average music fan can distinguish images like The Dark Side of the Moon or the Wall on any day of the week. There are many classics amid David Gilmour and Roger Waters, but many forget the one eccentric from days gone by.
Though the band has moved on from their '60s incarnation, the original version of Floyd had Syd Barrett out front delivering wild tales of psychedelia every time the band took the stage. The band seemed on the road to stardom, but the effects of the psychedelics were taking control of Barrett from the inside out. Quickly succumbing to the pressure of the rock and roll circus, Barrett left Pink Floyd and eventually faded from view entirely.
Once Barrett visited the band during the making of their album Wish You Were Here, he was a shell of his former self, his head shaven bald and looking like a ghost amid the other members.
After that one meeting, Barrett returned to hermit like seclusion, where he remained until his eventual death in 2006. Barrett may not have lasted long with Floyd, but his spirit had a drastic impact on everything the band did going forward.
