10 Overly Hated Musicians In Rock History
6. Chris Martin - Coldplay
When looking at the history of rock, the evolution chart seems to hit a wall when it comes to Coldplay.
Going from the doom and gloom of the grunge scene not even 10 years earlier, the music of Chris Martin and his band of brothers has made for some of the sleepiest excuses for rock and roll that the genre has to offer. Then again, have you ended up listening to any of those songs lately?
Compared to numerous throwbacks happening left and right these days, Chris Martin's impressive knack for songwriting was fairly compelling back in the day. Across albums like Parachutes and a Rush of Blood to the Head, you could really tell that they were taking their Radiohead and Britpop influences and aiming even higher, with songs that were both pillowy soft and aggressively forceful at the same time.
Before they managed to go full electronic in the back half of their career, Viva La Vida was also an absolute triumph, showing that they had the potential to delve into the classic realm of songwriting on par with some of their heroes like Peter Gabriel and The Beatles before them.
Even though Chris Martin doesn't really need to prove anything to anyone anymore, the fact that he's still trying to steer the band in a new direction on Everyday Life is proof enough that his creative heart is still in the right place.
