10 Perfect Metal Albums With No Bad Songs
7. Toxicity - System of a Down
Almost half of the metal coming out in the early '00s was about being put down by someone. Since Metallica were about to embarrass themselves on St. Anger and Pantera were going on an indefinite hiatus, the nu metal crowd coming up were more into talking about their parents who wanted nothing to do with them. Domestic issues can be a good feeding ground for angst, but so can the real life dangers going on around you.
Though System of a Down rose to prominence at the same time as the nu metal movement, they never really fit the mold. While sharing detuned guitars and a rhythmic foundation for the sound, the lyrics of Daron Malakian and Serj Tankian had a lot more to say, and Toxicity was them reaching for the stars.
At a time when the United States was about to go through some of the hardest issues they would have to face, you could have called this album prophetic in some ways, with the title track and Chop Suey talking about the broken government and people's tendencies to judge now and figure things out after the fact. With a tongue in cheek sense of humor to anchor everything, Toxicity was more than just a collection of songs at the time. These were the weapons that you could use against anyone who dared to step on you.
