10 Rock Bands That Have Two Frontmen

3. Linkin Park

On the nu metal spectrum, the idea of being the frontman went a few different ways. While some people took the lead of Jonathan Davis by letting out the weirder side of their vocal range, most of the commercial nu metal material consisted of just a rapper rhyming over some generic detuned riff. Just when things started to get too homogenous, the arrival of Linkin Park made for one of the most interesting vocal tandems in history.

Across every track on both Hybrid Theory and Meteora, the way that Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda approached vocal duties was very much a team sport. Instead of one guy taking the lead throughout the track, Shinoda would focus on the main rapping verses while Bennington focused on the actual singing. In one of the best cases of two vocalists in one, every song felt much more like a duet, as Bennington brought the same aggressive delivery of a rock singer while Shinoda covered the more hip hop influenced beats behind the scenes.

It also didn't hurt that Shinoda was a master of production, which made him the de facto coach of the group as he tried to get the best out of both his and Chester's performances. Though nu metal might be known for its more rudimentary style of playing, it takes a certain level of musical craftsmanship to be able to pull something like this off effectively.
