10 Rock Bands That Have Two Frontmen
2. The Clash
The main mission statement of the punk rock movement was pretty much "anything goes." Despite bands like the Sex Pistols having some not so subtle nods to anarchy, there was still a lot more power to be gained from this abrasive form of music. Whereas the Ramones may have gotten the ball rolling, the Clash managed to make the entire punk aesthetic feel like so much more on the strength of Joe Strummer and Mick Jones.
As opposed to your typical rock dynamic, Strummer and Jones felt like two sides of the same coin whenever they played. For Jones' part, he served as the main pop force behind the group, taking the primary vocals on the more commercial songs like Should I Stay or Should I Go and Train In Vain. However, anyone who knows the Clash knows that its beating heart was always Joe Strummer, who took the lead on some of the more pointed political statements like Safe European Home.
While you can't really call Strummer's voice the most radio-friendly at the best of times, he more than makes up for it in the conviction he has. Whenever you listen to a Strummer-style song, you can feel an added sense of urgency, as if he's on the verge of panic with every other word. Even though you would normally come just for the catchy tunes, it's the chemistry between both Strummer and Jones that makes you stay for more.
