10 Rock Bands That Quit At The Top

5. Guns N Roses

Most rock and rollers remember where they were the first time Guns N Roses stormed onto the scene with Welcome to the Jungle. After years of a bunch of hair metal bands milking the hard rock audience for all they were worth, here was a band that actually injected some guts back into rock and roll, with killer guitar lines and one hell of a frontman out in front. Though the band kept it rolling into the '90s, backstage was an invitation to the Axl Rose soap opera rather than a rock band.

Going on tour for the Use Your Illusion double album, it became apparent that Axl was concerned with only himself throughout the duration. With the band left waiting for Axl to write or even show up for a show, the flow of alcohol led to Slash and Duff McKagan burning themselves out on the road. The tension became too much that Izzy Stradlin ended up quitting in protest, leading to Gilby Clarke filling in for the rhythm guitarist on the road.

By the time everyone regrouped for the Spaghetti Incident a few years later, it was clear that Axl had gotten too much for everyone to bear. Though Chinese Democracy and even a reunion with Slash and Duff have unfolded in recent years, that initial spark from the original Guns has been lost to history.
