10 Rock Bands With 2 Masterpiece Music Albums
6. Nirvana
From the first jam sessions that they were playing, Kurt Cobain never started Nirvana to become the next Rolling Stones or anything. This was the kind of art rock that was way too left of the dial in the age of hair metal, and would probably not find too much of an audience outside of their native Seattle. A funny thing happened once they started recorded Nevermind though, and it would go on to set the entire rock scene on fire.
In between changing drummers and just a few days slogging away in a studio, Nevermind became the benchmark for what alternative rock was going to be, as the rest of the rock scene quickly forgot about the likes of Motley Crue to focus on everything else that the Seattle scene had to offer. For all of the accolades coming his way though, Kurt was never comfortable with his own fame, and In Utero was the result of him wanting to run away from his own star power as fast as possible.
Recorded with noise rock producer Steve Albini, what became Nirvana's swansong is more authentic to what Kurt wanted Nirvana to be, with songs that are undercut with blasts of noise and only hints of beauty sprinkled throughout the mix. While we would never see where Nirvana would have gone after this record, both Nevermind and In Utero might be the most emotionally naked that any artist has ever been in front of their fans.
