10 Rock Music Collaborations No One Could Have Predicted

1. Metallica & Dave Mustaine

The high school tiff between members of Metallica and their former guitarist Dave Mustaine is almost legendary at this point. The short version is Mustaine was booted from the band in 1983 due to drug and alcohol problems and a vicious temper (perish the thought), went on to form Megadeth, continued to hold a grudge for the next 30+ years.

Mustaine and Metallica's Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield and to a lesser extent Kirk Hammett have been trading barbs throughout the years, even when it looked like they were getting along during the Big 4 shows at Sonisphere Bulgaria in 2010 and UK in 2011. So you can imagine everybody's surprise when during Metallica's 30th anniversary shows in late 2011, Mustaine joined his former bandmates for some OG Metallica classics such as "Metal Militia", "Seek & Destroy", and "Phantom Lord".

Let's take stock of this, outside the Big 4 shows, Mustaine hadn't shared the stage with members of his former band since 1983, but here he was jamming out some classics alongside the beaming faces of Ulrich and Hetfield. They would eventually be joined onstage by fellow alumni and jamming bros Ron McGovney, Hugh Tanner and Lloyd Grant.
