10 Rock Songs That Are A Nightmare To Sing
1. Painkiller - Judas Priest
In the world of heavy metal, you're not going to find a better singer than Rob Halford any time soon. Though many have tried to come close to his outrageous style of delivery, Halford's mix of restraint and massive screaming passages have had metalheads comparing him to a heavier version of Pavarotti for years now. Still, even Pavarotti himself probably couldn't pull off something like Painkiller.
Considering this was made when Halford was approaching his 40s, he doesn't sound like he's accumulated an ounce of rust on his trademark pipes, carrying almost the entire song in his screaming register. While there are some bits of lower singing towards the mid section of the song, this is heavy metal on expert mode, with Halford taking every single syllable and reaching for greater sonic peaks every time he opens his mouth.
As if just having the raw execution of this song wasn't enough, the final few seconds get even more intense, taking the last "PAINKILLER" line and holding it for nearly 30 seconds. You can practically hear the applause in the studio here, as Halford never loses his place and keeps the same amount of grit in his voice throughout the entire duration of the note. Even though Judas Priest had already proven themselves as titans of metal as this point, this was the moment where they decided to show all of the new kids how it was done properly.
