10 Rock Songs You Didn't Know Had Big-Name Guest Stars
1. John Lennon - Fame
David Bowie is one of those rare breed of artists who you could say had multiple "golden periods." From his experimental work with art rock in the late 70's to his more classic glam rock era, the man was a musical titan whose sound knew no boundaries. However, somewhere in between these classic sections of Bowie's work comes Young Americans, whose soulful sound showed where Bowie would be headed later down the line.
Closing out the album is "Fame," whose main guitar lick and over-the-top vocal performances makes it one of the funkiest tracks that Bowie has ever put down. So with that pedigree, you'd probably expect someone like Isaac Hayes or Nile Rodgers having something to do with this, but the actual answer was much more Fab.
When cutting the tune, Bowie was actually working in New York at the same time John Lennon was cutting his record. After Bowie showed him the idea, Lennon ended up playing guitar on the track and delivering the song's key backing vocals of "fame."
Lennon had not been shy about his R&B influences in the past, but this track gave a new spin for what we expected out of the 60's icon. With this little bit of Beatles magic, many fans were left chomping at the bit as to where Bowie was going to go next.
