10 Songs That Are Meant To Confuse You
1. 15 Step - Radiohead
Radiohead have practically made a career out of messing with their fans. Aside from departing into unchartered territory back in the days of Kid A, the '00s era of these British rockers has been anything but ordinary, going from strange loops on the King of Limbs to the mix of glitchy production and rock instrumentation on Hail to The Thief. While having an off the wall song from these guys isn't that strange, 15 Step has you questioning why it works so well from the very beginning.
Kicking off their late period masterpiece In Rainbows, the opening drum beat alone already sets the tone strangely. For any of the musical connoisseurs, this song is actually in 5/4, which is already a somewhat strange time signature to even keep up with. Though it would be fine if everything stayed in that tempo, the drum sample makes things even more disorienting, playing every other measure a lot more syncopated than the one before.
What you're left with is a sense of rhythm that constantly feels like it's slowing down and speeding back up again, which makes way for more experiments when the bridge gives way to a freeflowing sense of timing. Even though there are more twists and turns going on in this section than many would care to stomach, this is probably the most 'Radiohead' sounding Radiohead song ever conceived.
