3. Let It Be - The Beatles
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcBnJw-H2wQ Everyone loves The Beatles. Your Dad does, your Aunt does, even you do. With such an extensive back catalogue of singles, albums and compilations it is easy to forget that some of their biggest hits limped into number 2 on the charts. Let It Be was released in 1970 and was the last Beatles single out before Sir Paul McCartney announced his departure from the group. So really it is a farewell song for the most successful boy band and what a stunning track it is. Widely considered to be one of the best songs of all time, if not THE best, in 2004 it was voted the 20th Greatest Song of All Time by Rolling Stone. Being praised by Rolling Stone seems to be a trend for this bunch of number 2 singles. Furthermore, the song has also been covered on American Idol, The Voice and X Factor and was even covered by the late, great Ray Charles. It is a goto melody to master on multiple instruments and is guaranteed to be received well by a captive audience, far more so than some certified number one's! The song is a fine ballad that will remain on playlists for decades to come. Whether someone owns it on vinyl, MP3 or streams it to a device, Let It Be will always be around. As an Academy Award and Grammy winning song with such incredible critical and popular acclaim, it's unfathomable why this didn't hit number 1.
