10 Surprising Music Videos You Never Expected From The Song

5. Numb - U2

U2 have never really come across as a band that want to push the boat out.

They seem like the type who like to keep the boat securely moored in the harbour, affix some giant LED screens to it, and then charge people several hundreds of dollars to view it.

So, imagine everyone's surprised when they not only recorded a strange industrial synth record, but put it out as a single.

Numb, from the album Zooropa, sounds drastically different to most of the band's other output. Even Bono gets shoved away from the microphone, making space for guitarist The Edge to deliver a low, monotonous set of dystopian lyrics.

If that wasn't weird enough, then watch the video. It's mental.

The Edge is sat staring right down the camera lens the entire time. Whilst he's there, minding his own business, a variety of odd things happen to him. He gets cigarette smoke blown in his face. Some women start licking him. The rest of the band wrap rope round his face and then push him over.

What does it mean? Who cares - this is a fascinating viewing experience.
