10 Terrible Rock Songs By Legendary Rock Bands
6. Sell Me A Coat - David Bowie
From the minute he stepped onto the rock scene, David Bowie never was content to stay in the same sound for more than a few years. Even when he was at death's door back in 2016, he was still trying to turn his sound inside out with Blackstar and ended his career on one of the highest notes that you could ask for. In the very early days though, Bowie had a lot of learning to do before becoming our resident Space Oddity.
Across his true debut album, Bowie feels extremely out of his element, going for more of a vaudeville sound than anything else that he would produce. As far as singles go, Sell Me a Coat is probably the most 'David Bowie' sounding song on the record, and even then it's got a lot of rough edges, sounding closer to a chipper children's song than the far off wonders that we would hear a bit further down the line.
Though you could tell he was going for something off the wall, the song is so innocent that it almost comes off as smarmy or ironic by the end of the track. It looked like David agreed with this assessment as well, since he started over from scratch and reintroduced himself to the world on his next album, which featured the first great Bowie song with Space Oddity. Then again, could you imagine the alternate universe where this is the star we got instead of the Thin White Duke?
