15 Best Heavy Metal Songs Of 2016 (So Far)

7. Gojira - Stranded

The metal world has certainly missed the musical stylings of France€™s best genre export Gojira. The last four years have been a trying time for the group, with personal issues delaying any new material. In 2016 however, fans of the band can once again rejoice with the release of a new album in June and their latest single €˜Stranded€™.

They aren€™t a band that likes to rehash old ground, and with €˜Stranded€™, they settle into a simpler, mid-tempo groove that is certainly a far cry from their more complex works. This new sound is one that is much finer around the edges but no less impactful because of it. The bludgeoning downtuned riff on the verses is further improved on by a weird, high-pitched, guitar squeal that serves as the main hook to this chugging tune.

An anthemic chorus perfectly builds on the scorching verses before it, propelling this one into a fist-pumping pounder that is just begging to be sang along to. If this bewitching song is anything to go by, then expectations for their upcoming LP have to be at an all-time high.

These French metallers sound as sharp as they€™ve ever been despite a more accessible sound scheme. Hardcore fans of Gojira are sure to cry foul play, but for the casual metal fan, €˜Stranded€™ provides a perfect entry point to the group€™s stellar discography to date.
