15 Things Only Skrillex Fans Will Understand

12. Why Do People Keep Calling His Music Dubstep?

There's a definite dubstep influence in Skrillex's music. No doubt. But his fans (and Skrillex himself) are pretty much sick of having to explain that he covers a wide variety of different styles of EDM. His music ranges from dubstep, to drum & bass, to IDM, to electro, to house, to garage... He is remarkably diverse. Just check out tracks like Leaving for proof of that! He says he "never set out to be part of a genre, because listen to all types of music." People that refer to his music as "dubstep" and nothing else clearly don't listen to much dance music elsewhere. They'd also know, as Skrillex is quick to point out, that the original dubstep scene was centred on Croydon in the mid-2000s. They influenced him, certainly, but he fused those influences with other styles. As he says, "No-one cares about genre when they're dancing!" Perhaps it's easier for his detractors to criticise his sound when they limit it to a single category? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_8xfmxea2M
