25 Best Metal Albums Of The Decade

16. The Ocean - Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic (2018)

A concept album exploring - and I quote - an era that "witnessed the evolution and diversification of plant and animal life on Earth, and the partial destruction of it during 5 mass extinction events," Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic is a lot.

Opening with the closest thing The Ocean has come to a straightforward banger in years, "Cambrian II: Eternal Recurrence," the album's progressive sludge straddles a middle ground between previous releases Precambrian (2007) and Pelegial (2013). Whether it is as successful as either is up for debate, but with its swelling crescendos, precise movements, and of course, crushing riffage, it is a logical step from one of metal's most forward-thinking bands.
