Arctic Monkeys: 10 Underrated B-Sides (That Deserved To Be Album Tracks)
6. Too Much To Ask (Fluorescent Adolescent, 2007)
Resplendent with riffs and bass lines which seem to lay the foundation for Humbug, Too Much To Ask admittedly might have been a strange choice for Favourite Worst Nightmare, and would be a better fit for Arctic Monkeys' third record.
But being an album which flirts with different genres as it is, we're sure the boys could have found some space on their sophomore effort for this hidden gem, and its inclusion might even have made Humbug seem to come a little less out of nowhere.
Opening with an ominous guitar melody, the song's minor key sets the scene for a couple wondering whether their "love is no longer in bloom". Lyrically, the song remains a perfect fit for Favourite Worst Nightmare, and couplets like "Would it be outrageous to say / We're either shouting or we're shagging?" are amongst the most insightful (though admittedly direct) of those penned in the Nightmare sessions, as Turner contemplates the tail end of a relationship gone sour.
Something of a sequel to Mardy Bum, a key change leaves the singer longing to go back to how things once were, while the line "Would a kiss be too much to ask?" with its inevitable answer could have been an appropriate lead in to Only Ones Who Know.
