DOOM's first album adheres the closest to a comic book formula. The narrative, much more episodic than being a strictly linear story, contains a great deal of highlights such as "Red and Gold," "Gas Drawls," "Dead Bent," and "Rhymes Like Dimes," to name a few.

Operation: Doomsday is a brilliant debut - full of engaging, colorful wordplay that provided for a refreshing take on hip hop of the time. But its brilliance lies in the idea that is is an introduction.

It introduces us to a compelling character, though in a messy way. The messiest parts of the album are its skits and interludes. A gluttony of interludes isn't a foreign concept to DOOM, but the manner in which they are placed on the album slows down an already all-over-the-place work.

The album functions as something of a learning process for DOOM. Whatever works on the album is completely improved upon in his subsequent releases. What follows up later on in his career is funnier, tighter, and better produced.

And while the album may be eclectic in terms of its flow and spotty production quality, it still holds up as a high point in DOOM's discography. Operation: Doomsday may be his most accessible work. If you are not on board with this record, it is likely that you won't agree with anything else DOOM has released.
