Eurovision 2018: 9 Other Hungarian Bands You Should Hear
2. Unknown Child
Dream pop/post-rock.
FFO: Lana Del Ray, the dark folk side of Myrkur.
A side project of graphic artist and lead singer of indie punk band Gustave Tiger, Erika Szurcsik, Unknown Child is a dreamy, melancholic, almost uncomfortably bleak affair that blends the effect-layered guitar work of post-rock with the dark and hypnotic delivery of the dreamiest dream pop.
A stark contrast to Szurcsik's main band, the dark and dreary project first took form in 2014 with the debut EP When the Unknown Child Swam Across the Ocean for the First Time. From there, Unknown Child began hosting a variety of intimate performances and would then follow it up with 2015's self-titled full-length debut.
Describing the project's name and vibe as "the ultimate outsider without name and responsibility", Unknown Child has continually evolved its core sound, experimenting more and more with loops, sounds and distortions, culminating in the recently released sophomore album ID Check at Night. The Bruce Springsteen-inspired release is a commentary on loneliness and the idea of being alone and in your own private bubble, despite people all around in day to day life.
Unknown Child continues its small, intimate shows in and around Budapest.
