Marvel Cinematic Universe: Soundtrack Scores Ranked From Worst To Best
17. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
To say that critics did not enjoy Henry Jackman's score for Captain America: The Winter Soldier would be putting it mildly. One critic, James Southall of Movie Wave, was quoted as saying 'When will filmmakers grow a set of balls and reject this sort of approach to their films.'
The main bulk of criticism of the soundtrack is leveled at its similarities to many of the Hans Zimmer style themes that had grown up in the previous decade. This was an old argument, dating back to the first Iron Man movie. The ostinato theme that is on show here brings to mind Zimmer and James Newton Howard's score for Batman Begins.
The opening of the film pays homage to Silvestri's theme from The First Avenger, though this is missing from the soundtrack album and is then largely missing from the film itself. Those who were hoping for a thematic sequel to that film were left sorely wanting.
Jackman however tried to shake up the style. The Winter Soldier is widely held up as one of the best films in the MCU, with its story and depiction closer to that of espionage thrillers than many of the other MCU entries. While his soundtrack serves to suit that, it seems as though it was somewhat out of place in the new Marvel universe.
Is the score somewhat generic? Yes. Does it deserve the hate it received? No. Here's hoping that time will look back with kinder eyes.
