The Beatles: 13 Tracks To Forget

8. What Goes On

Oh, Ringo. Poor, poor Ringo. It's great that he looked to get more involved on Rubber Soul by actually helping compose this tune, but it's just so goofy and off to the point where you kind of wonder why it was allowed on the record in the first place.

Rubber Soul, mind you, was an album where the band branched even further out of its comfort zone. Harrison broke out the sitar for Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) and McCartney the fuzz bass for Think For Yourself. These were songs that may have contained the same subject matter fans had grown to accept from The Beatles, but What Goes On was just a step back to what can only be described as the height of Beatlemania in 1964.

It's much like You Like Me Too Much in that it has a bit too much of a dated rockabilly sound to it, and the lyrics aren't strong enough to back up that retro feel. Even worse is that the guitar work is a bit choppy. Rubber Soul is a great album that should be heard from start to finish, but there wouldn't be anything wrong with skipping this track.
