The Secret Genius Behind Your Favourite Songs
5. Becomes An Advisor For Dream Theater
Throughout the 90's, Desmond continued to provide fantastic hits for his old friends in Aerosmith and KISS, which kept him in high demand for music execs. While every pop star wanted to have Child provide his services to their tracks, he decided to step outside of his comfort zone into more prog territory.
For most metalheads, Dream Theater were one of the most in-demand acts going in the 90's, with essential albums like Images and Words under their belt. While the initial sessions for the band's 4th record were going smoothly, one of the tracks just wasn't gelling in the correct way. Unsure of what to do, producer Kevin Shirley suggested John Petrucci meet up with Child to see what he could do with the track. The instrumental passage quickly blossomed once Child got involved, resulting in the song "You Not Me."
After just a few tweaks, the tune went from being almost entirely discarded to being one of the most captivating tunes of the entire record. The band felt so strongly about the track they even released it as one of the promotional single for the record. Child may not have been as involved with the writing process as he was with other acts, but bigger hits were still around the corner.
