From way back in 1983, Colour of Magic was the first Discworld novel and it made Terry Pratchett a household name across the UK. It's amazing influence over both comedy and fantasy literature has been highlighted repeatedly through the decades, especially in its 2009 TV adaptation starring David Jason.

Prathcett himself described Colour of Magic as the Blazing Saddles of classical fantasy and it's easy to see why once you delve into this light-hearted, tongue in cheek classic. The Colour of Magic follows the story of a bumbling and clueless wizard named Rincewind, as he escorts a travelling businessman, Twoflower, through the Discworld's capital city, Ankh-Morpork, and beyond. Along with Twoflower's sentient and clunky suitcase, the Luggage, Twoflower and Rincewind form an unlikely trio as they unknowingly take centre stage in a role-playing game between gods.

This book is an all-time great as far as British fantasy novels are concerned and its influence over the early career of Pratchett can never be understated. Thanks to this book, one of the most intricate, diverse, prolific and consistent fantasy worlds ever constructed came to exist. Terry Pratchett was, and always will be, a legend of the fantasy genre.
