For a few moments after a deranged fan shot former Pantera guitarist, Dimebag Darrel, on stage at a concert with his new band, Damageplan, the other fans continued pumping their fists and enjoying themselves. Some thought the shooting was a hoax or part of the performance. It was a heavy metal concert after all. The killing happened on December 8. 2004, the 24th anniversary of John Lennon's murder.

Abbot's killer, Nathan Gale, had been discharged from the US Marines the previous year because of his paranoid schizophrenia. He was also obsessed with guitarists. Gale waited outside the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus while several local bands performed their opening acts. He refused to go inside, saying he had no interest in listening to "shitty local bands." He was waiting for Damageplan.

Once Damageplan began their set, he stormed the stage, reportedly yelled something about Pantera, and shot Abbot several times. Three more people died trying to stop Gale. Columbus police officer James Niggemeyer ended the slaughter when he shot Gale in the head after the killer took a hostage.
