10 Craziest Planets In The Universe
3. The Planet That Rains Precious Gems
Kepler-2b is an exoplanet orbiting the star HAT-P-7, over 1123 light years away in the Cygnus constellation.
Soon after its discovery in 2008, scientists noticed that this planet is almost tidally locked (each planetary rotation takes 100s of days) and seemed to orbit in the opposite direction to the rest of the star system. This tidal locking means that the winds on this planet are also extreme. Later, studies were performed to examine the planet’s atmosphere.
What stunned the scientists was that the atmosphere seemed to be largely composed of aluminium oxide. This led scientists to believe that on the cooler “Night Side” of the planet, it could theoretically rain rubies and sapphires.
Rubies and sapphires may be better than glass, but the conditions of this planet are still deadly. But what if the planet itself was made of precious gems?
