What could be more haunting than a crumbling Soviet ghost town? A floating Soviet ghost town thats what. Alright, its not entirely deserted - there are still some inhabitants - but the words 'partially deserted Communist oil rig' were just too irresistible to ignore. Situated in the Caspian Sea, about thirty miles off the coast of Azerbaijan sits an enormous mass of twisting steel spires rising out of the sea like some sort of metal Kraken as most parts of this oil rig have become inaccessible due to collapsed bridges in an ironic metaphor for the Cold War. Its like Fritz Langs Metropolis collapsed in on itself as where was once supposed to be football fields, libraries and a lemonade factory, there is instead just a lot of different means for impaling yourself. For added measure, Google Maps wont allow you to zoom in on this slowly sinking shell of an idea, whilst part of The World Is Not Enough was filmed there. The Oil Rocks makes a strong case for being possibly the most Soviet place on the planet, but unfortunately that honour is reserved for another place on this list.
