10 Infamously Chilling Deaths And Disappearences
8. The Lead Mask Case
In August of 1966, a boy was flying a kite on Vintem Hill in Niteroi, Brazil, when he came across the bodies of two men. When the police arrived, the scene perplexed them: both bodies were dressed in formal suits, raincoats, and lead masks like the kind used to protect against radiation. The men were also found with an empty water bottle, two towels, and a notebook. Inside the notebook were a few notes-translated from Portuguese:
16:30 be at agreed place, 18:30 swallow capsules, after effect protect metals wait for mask signal.
The police were able to identify the men as Manoel Pereira de Cruz and Miguel Jose Viana, two electricians from Campos dos Goytacazes, a town a few miles northeast of the hill. After an investigation the police learned that a few days earlier the men had claimed to be buying materials for work when they boarded a bus from their town. Closer to their destination, they bought waterproof coats and a bottle of water from a nearby bar.
A waitress at the bar remembers one of the men nervously checking his watch. An autopsy was performed long after the bodies were found and the coroner claimed the bodies had no signs of trauma and were too decomposed to determine a cause of death.
