J.K. Rowling was not born into a particularly poor family, but after splitting from her husband in 1993, she found herself jobless and with a baby to look after. It was at this time that she suffered from depression, which in turn became the inspiration for the dementors.

During the writing of The Philosopher’s Stone, Rowling was continuously on state benefits with no other source of income. Once she finished the novel, it was several more years before she found a publisher who accepted her manuscript. When the first book was finally published in 1997, Rowling was advised to keep her job (she was a teacher at the time), as children’s books rarely made much money.

To everyone’s surprise, The Philosopher’s Stone was a massive hit, with a number of glowing reviews from several major publications helping to promote the book. Rowling was soon able to ditch her job and become a full-time author. Yet her success didn’t stop there. The series grew to such a phenomenal size that Rowling became the first billionaire to make their fortune through writing.

Such a transition from rags to riches is a hugely inspirational story for the young writers of today.
