10 Serial Killer Crimes That Took Years To Solve

3. Leonarda Cianciulli

BTK Killer
Wikipedia

A lesser known but no less dangerous killer from Italy. She is known sometimes as the Soap-Maker of Corregio due to her disposal of one victim's body.

During her life she had 17 pregnancies; 3 of these are miscarriages and 10 children died in youth. This left four children who she was very protective over. However, when WWII began her eldest son was called for duty. This fear of losing another child drove her to believe human sacrifices would protect him.

She had three victims, the first of which was a spinster seeking her help to find love. Cianciulli instead drugged her and killed her, hiding the body in a closet. She cut her into pieces, put these into a pot and dissolved the body. She then used the dried blood as an ingredient in tea cakes, which she served to the neighbours and ate some herself. The second victim was treated exactly the same as the first. The final victim in 1940 underwent the same process of drugging and murder, however, Cianciulli decided to use this final body for soap as well as cakes, giving her her nickname.

Cianciulli was not discovered until a family member of the final victim went looking into it. Initially she denied the alegations but confessed once the suspicion turned to her son. She was tried in 1946 and found guilty but remained unrepentant. She spent 30 years in prison and then 3 in a criminal asylum where she eventually passed away.
