10 Things We Learned From Miley Cyrus On The Joe Rogan Experience
1. TikTok Is Pretty Much A Record Label Now
As the pair spoke about how the music industry has changed in terms of how credits are presented and people are paid, the topic of streaming was brought into the mix.
This then led to Miley revealing that some of the best lawyers around don't even understand what is going on in the music industry at this moment due to the fact that things are changing so rapidly. Gone are the days of simply selling records and getting paid, now there's the added variables of streaming, videos and even Tik Tok to take into account when it comes to earning money from a song.
According to Miley, 'TikTok is like a fricken label now'. She stated that TikTokers are apparently paid by record labels to perform to certain artist's music as these numbers end up counting towards their overall streaming revenue. Cyrus then quickly added that she wasn't sure if she was allowed to disclose this information, but she also said that there are 'TikTok agencies' which focus on pushing youngsters as the next TikTok breakout hit.
On the bright side, though, Miley did say that it was nice to see these young performers creating content for themselves whenever they wanted. Whereas when she was a child star, Cyrus would have to go through a ton of middle men just to get a video out.
In regards to 'TikTok agencies', however, Miley undoubtedly put it best; 'it's like some f*cked up Black Mirror sh*t.'
