Smith was originally offered the role of Neo in the 1999 action/fantasy film The Matrix. Anyone who has seen the film knows that the lead eventually went to Keanu Reeves. In an interview with Wired, Smith said, "I would have absolutely messed up The Matrix. At that point I wasn't smart enough as an actor...whereas Keanu was" Despite the disappointment of Wild Wild West Smith has said that he harbors no regrets about his decision, asserting that Keanu Reeves's performance as Neo was superior to what Smith himself would have achieved (although in interviews subsequent to the release of Wild Wild West he stated that he "made a mistake on Wild Wild West - that could have been better")
