For the online side, blame Amazon's wishlist if you really want, but the trend started well before that. "Here are some great gift ideas for me" is the opening of a letter folks simply don't need. Frankly, you're lucky you're not getting a lump of coal. There's no doubt these sorts of lists come with good intentions - giving something useful should be more rewarding than giving some piece of crap no one wants, after all.
