After the 1986 nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, a great deal of land was left abandoned due to extreme levels of radiation, most creepily an entire town near the site called Pripyat. Nature has taken over the city, which is completely deserted except for the few photographers brave enough to venture there and bring back proof of its decaying beauty.
12. Hashima Island - Japan
Hashima Island used to be a thriving coal mining town packed to the brim with natural resources, but now it more closely resembles the set of a Japanese horror film. The town was abandoned when petrol became Japan's dominant fuel, with all of the island's still-standing structures serving as the only reminders of its 5000+ former inhabitants.
