The cause of James Garfield's death, meanwhile, was never up for debate. And was absolutely the fault of the doctors who tried to save his life. The 20th President Of The United States was one of the many leaders of the country who suffered an assassination attempt but, technically, the killer wasn't the one to shuffle him off of his mortal coil. In fact, it was the doctors trying to save his life that did him in. Using the newly-invented metal detector (by telephone inventor Alexander Graham Bell, no less), the surgeons attempted to locate the bullet so they could dig it out. Unfortunately, they kept detecting the metal bed springs he was lying on instead, with multiple incisions in the wrong place causing him to bleed out.
