17. Churchill Became A PoW During The Boer War After Being Captured While Working As A Newspaper Correspondent... But Managed To Escape
While working as a newspaper correspondent in South Africa during the Second Boer War, Churchill (right in the picture above) was on an armoured train that was captured in an ambush. With a £25 bounty on his head, Churchill was kept as a Prisoner of War in Pretoria before he jumped over a wall four weeks after being captured and managed to hitch a ride on trains headed towards Lourenço Marques in Delagoa Bay, Mozambique. After eventually contacting the British consul, he managed to travel on a steamship down to Durban and continue to report on the war.
