After years of negotiation and disagreement between the two camps, the much-anticipated matchup between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao finally took place on May 2nd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. While the fight itself struggled to live up to the hype, with criticism levelled at Mayweather Jr.s defensive focus and Pacquiaos inability break the American down, it still managed to smash records to become the highest grossing PPV in history. With initial estimates expecting around 4.4million purchases to be made for the fight, a later revised figure in September put this at closer to 4.6million. The total revenue in the US alone was in excess of $410million, and close to 50% of households were thought to have tuned in back in Pacquiaos native Philippines. Floyd Mayweather J. ran out as eventual winner by unanimous decision after 12 rounds.
