3. The Myth Of Krakatau

It's hard not to miss the towering hub of Volcano Bay. The 200ft tall Krakatau volcano is already drawing attention, and the park isn't even open yet.

This "mythical" volcano is unlike any other. Just like the story of the Waturi, the volcano has a rich and legendary tale.

According to the tales of the Waturi, long before the Earth came to be as it is now, there was a God named Krakatau who had a beautiful and head strong daughter named Tai Nui.

Tai Nui fell in love with a native named Kala and kept her love a secret from her father fearing his rage. When Krakatau found out about the secret lovers, he cast Kala into the sky where he became the Moon. So upset by the loss of her love, Tai Nui cried, and cried until her tears formed the sea.

There is however a happy ending for the pair as Dale told me:

Krakatau was sitting on the beach one day, proud as punch at what he had done. The tears of the sea, the tears of his daughter washed up around his legs. He realised the error of the choice he had made. So he reached into the ground and he grabbed the earth and he pulled it to the sky, connecting sea and sky, connecting Kala and Tai Nui... They live in the moon, and they fall to the sea every night.

In honour of the couple, the two drop slides in the volcano are named "Kala" and "Tai Nui". The face each other, so as to symbolise them falling to the sea each night.

It seems that Krakatau also learnt the error of his ways. He decided to trap all his rage inside the volcano. This spirit is named Vol and guests get the chance to speak to him within the caverns of the volcano. According to Dale "you can speak to Vol and hear his wisdom and have him play tricks on you".
