5 Things About America That The UK Doesn't Understand
1. Guns
And here's the big one: Guns. More prevalent than the flag, guns are a touchy subject in this country. Many people have several high-powered guns in their homes, and indoctrinate their children to love them. You can easily do a web search and find things like Christmas cards of families posing with their guns. What’s more, guns are defended more fiercely than any other protection under the law we have in this country.
Why? Why are guns such a big deal? No clue, really. Statistics show they're not safe to keep in homes, and we clearly have a problem here. The NRA is a big part of that, selling the idea that the government, or anyone else who wants gun control, wants to allow criminals to come murder your family in the night.
It’s this bizarre thing where if you say, “guns are dumb” in this country, you’re immediately berated, having the second amendment quoted at you. This is from the same group of people who don’t like that the first allows you to burn a flag, or that the fourteenth guarantees rights and protections to illegal immigrants. When it comes to those, the constitution is wrong, and should be fixed. When it comes to guns, it’s immutable and perfect.
Why? It's the same reason people build bunkers in their yards, or stock up for armageddon: that irrational fear from earlier. It’s because everyone here has some stupid, irrational fear. Each other? Foreigners? Who knows? All that can be said is, scared people will grasp at anything to feel safe.
