Any year is a good one to go to Rome, with its storied past, dazzling architecture, and even more impressive food, but 2016 is a must for anyone of a religious inclination.

Walking the Pilgrims' footpath, or the Via Francigena, is still a relatively popular activity, but 2016 has been declared a special Year of Mercy by Pope Francis, meaning it's an even better time to undertake all or at least part of the walk, with the promise of absolution of all sins.

A special pilgrims footpath has been created in Rome, and while doing the whole 2000km may seem daunting, the trek does go through some incredibly beautiful French and Italian countryside, and if you're in a group then it'll make it much easier to take your time and enjoy the surroundings.
