8 Famous People From History Who Were Surprisingly Socially Awkward

8. George Washington

George Washington was one of the most significant figures in the history of the USA. He was instrumental in defeating the British during the American Revolutionary War, presided over the convention that drew up the US constitution and became the country's first president. However, he had a rather embarrassing problem with his teeth, in that when he became president in 1789, he only had one. Over the years Washington had several contraptions made to replace his natural gnashers, but contrary to popular belief none of these were made of wood. Instead, they were made of bone, hippopotamus ivory, lead, brass screws and even real human teeth, 9 of which his account book states were bought from 'Negroes' for 122 shillings. Some people now believe that Washington's dental problems made him very self-conscious and less willing to speak in public. His mouthful of metal is evident in the protruding jaw that is visible in many of his portraits.
