Babylon 5's first commanding officer, Michael O'Hare's Commander Jeffrey Sinclair was deeply troubled by missing memories related to his service in the Battle of the Line, Earth Alliance's last-ditch effort to stop the Minbari invasion of Earth. He would later learn that the Minbari abducted him and discovered that Minbari souls were being reborn as humans, forcing the Minbari to surrender.

When O'Hare departed, Bruce Boxleitner's Captain John Sheridan took command. Nicknamed Starkiller, Sheridan destroyed the Minbari flagship, the Black Star. Because of this, the Minbari only grudgingly accepted his command of Babylon 5. He was burdened by the loss of his wife, Anna, an archaeologist who died during an expedition to the mysterious planet Z'ha'dum.

Tracy Scoggins's Captain Elizabeth Lochley took command after Sheridan became president of the Interstellar Alliance. A recovering alcoholic and drug addict, she was haunted by the overdose of her teenage friend, Zoe, and her tumultuous relationship with her alcoholic father.

Deep Space Nine's only commanding officer, Avery Brook's Commander, and then Captain, Benjamin Sisko, was widowed when the USS Saratoga was destroyed during the Battle of Wolf 359, Starfleet's attempt to prevent the Borg assimilation of Earth. Now a single father, he reluctantly accepted command of the station after a period of doubt.
