The 14 Dumbest Things In Star Trek: Insurrection

5. Firming Up

The portrayal of the "fountain of youth" effects on the Enterprise crew are a mixed bag. Picard getting his mambo on is harmless. Geordi’s gaining natural eyesight is slightly touching, even if it makes little logical sense. As for the rest, well, the effects are more laughable than fun or funny. Worf reverts to puberty and gets a ginormous pimple. Crusher and Troi talk about their breasts. Data de-ages into a “fully functional” battery-powered adult toy … Oh wait, he doesn’t, but that’s about as adolescent as the other examples.

Troi suddenly employing the word “boobs” is so out of place as to be nothing but cringe. Having Data repeat it to Worf adds insult to injury. At that time Trek’s dialog remained grounded in the more formal speech patterns that prevailed when the original Star Trek hit the airwaves, so the language doesn’t feel organic to the characters. “Boobs” is as out of place as “fart” would be. Marina Sirtis might say it. Troi, not so much.

Star Trek would eventually engage in F-bombardment, so perhaps we should consider ourselves lucky that this is the worst we got. Imagine if we had to hear Troi expound on Riker’s junk “firming up.” The horror…
