10 Actors Who Turned Down The Decade's Biggest TV Shows
5. Jessica Chastain - Season 2 Protagonist (True Detective)
Last month, the rumour mill exploded that Jessica Chastain had been offered a part in the second season of HBO's superb drama True Detective. Though this was never actually confirmed by either HBO or Chastain, she was quick to deny that she would have any presence in the show, claiming, It's such an awkward thing...That news broke yesterday and it went crazy on the internet. There was so much of an explosion. Also it's an awkward thing because when all that attention happens, it takes away from whoever plays the role. I love Woody Harrelson, and I'm gonna watch the second season just like I watched every episode of the first. But I won't be on it. Many have taken Chastain's definitive statement as proof that she was offered a part and quietly passed on it, though we may never know for sure. But if HBO were as smart as we think they are, hopefully they did lobby hard for the talented actress to take the part. Would It Have Worked? Without a shadow of a doubt. With Chastain's track record playing strong women, most memorably in Zero Dark Thirty, she would have effortlessly filled Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey's shoes. If the show truly will feature a female protagonist next season, they'll struggle to find an actress as tough and emotionally resourceful as Chastain.
