10 Amazing TV Shows That Became Unwatchable
2. Sherlock
There have been countless different takes on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes over the years, but when the BBC launched Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role, it did something radical in bringing the detective into the modern world.
To say that it was a success would be a huge understatement. Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Sherlock and Watson were utterly compelling to watch, and with just three episodes per season, each entry generally felt special.
By the fourth season, though, it seemed as though the show had almost become a parody of itself. The stories became too ridiculous, but it may have been that it suffered from its own success. Perhaps maintaining such an incredible level of quality was never going to be achievable. But this level of falloff was ridiculous.
It was the final episode that put the nail in the coffin for many viewers, as the episode 'The Final Problem' that pitted Sherlock, Watson, and Mycroft (Mark Gatiss) against Holmes' sister Eurus (Sian Brooke) was just too outlandish and confusing. Of course you had to suspend your disbelief throughout the series, but the earlier episodes were at least rational and grounded, while season four, 'The Final Problem' in particular, threw that out the window.
If we're being completely honest, you could argue that the show was never quite the same after the death of Andrew Scott's exceptional take on Moriarty.
