This entry comes with a large trigger warning for sexual assault.

If you thought Game of Thrones took the fantasy genre in a dark direction, you clearly aren't familiar with the TV or film series adapted from this manga, written by the late great Kentaro Miura.

The story of Berserk follows the swordsman Guts as he joins forces with the Band of the Hawk, led by the charismatic Griffith, to who he becomes invaluable. Alongside this friendship, Guts forms a loving relationship with the uncompromising Casca, a soldier who once had romantic feelings for Griffith.

This story ends shockingly, as Griffith chooses to betray all of his friends in the quest for power by sacrificing them to the god-hand - a collection of demonic beings. During this horrifying encounter, Griffith exudes his newfound power by brutally raping Casca in front of Guts.

The results of this unthinkable act, the loss of her friends and the fact that she is now marked for death cause Casca to completely lose her mind. She can no longer speak, is horrified by anyone's touch, and is essentially infantile. It seems that those who were devoured by demons faced a fate far more appealing than hers.

Although the show was full of pain and death, seeing this happen to Casca was the worst of it all.
