The Sopranos may have been the series that really turned HBO into a dramatic powerhouse, but Oz was the one that showed it was even possible. And while David Chase's epic took home 21 Emmys, including two wins for Outstanding Drama Series, Oz received just two nominations across its six-year run (for Guest Actor and Casting).

Prior to The West Wing and The Sopranos hitting big, Outstanding Drama Series was largely fought between shows like The Practice and NYPD: Blue. Oz, despite its stellar writing and cast, couldn't get a look in. It's a sign that the show was slightly ahead of its time, with its shocking, brutal nature garnering some controversy and critical backlash.
