10 Bad TV Shows With Great Opening Title Sequences
8. Carnivale
Carnivale may be the closest thing to a good show on this list. Which is a shame really, because it's the only one that never really found a strong enough audience to keep going. A fascinating look at a freak show during the great depression, Carnivale creates compelling and fascinating characters, but is ultimately too much of a tonal mess to really stick the landing.
However, the opening credits of this unique entity of a show are a thing to behold. Merging the two main aesthetic elements couldn't have been easy, but this opening sequence does an incredible job of making the two seem made for each other. Whoever designed this sequence knows how to make tonal dissonance work, and it is quite absorbing to watch.
Taking place almost entirely within Tarot cards and stock footage, this opening uses visual trickery, metaphor, and some awe-inspiring artwork to make the world of the Carnivale come to life. Perhaps ANY live action show following this sequence would feel underwhelming, no matter how good.
